Rifugio Coldai
The Rifugio Adolfo Sonino al Coldài is a CAI (Italian Alpine Club) mountain refuge located in the Dolomites, in the Civetta mountain range, at 2,135 meters above sea level, near Lake Coldai.
Rifugio Coldai is one of the most iconic mountain huts along the Alta Via 1 and a true gateway to the wild beauty of the Civetta massif. Located at 2,132 meters, the hut sits on a natural balcony just below the dramatic northwest cliffs of the Civetta—often called the “Wall of Walls” due to its immense, vertical limestone face. Its position makes it a beloved stop for trekkers, day hikers, and sunrise photographers searching for a deep, immersive Dolomites experience.
From the hut, a short walk leads to the enchanting Lago Coldai, a crystal-clear alpine lake nestled in a rocky basin. Early in the morning, the lake often reflects the surrounding peaks like a mirror, creating one of the most memorable views on the entire Alta Via 1. The area around the hut is also home to curious marmots and grazing chamois, adding to the sense of untouched mountain wilderness.
