How Far in Advance Should You Book a Hut-to-Hut Hike in the Dolomites?

Planning a hut-to-hut hike in the Dolomites is exciting — but timing matters more than most people expect.

One of the most common questions we get is:👉 “When should I book my trip?”

The short answer: earlier than you think. The long answer depends on your flexibility, the route you choose, and the time of year.

Why booking early is so important

Unlike hotels, mountain huts (rifugi) have very limited capacity. Many offer only a small number of beds, and they fill up quickly — especially during the main hiking season.

Popular routes like Alta Via 1 are often fully booked more than a year in advance, particularly for:

Once huts are full, there are usually no alternatives nearby — which makes early planning essential.

Recommended booking timelines

Spring / early summer (June)

If you’re planning for June, you’ll find more availability — but it’s still best to book 8–12 months in advance.

Snow conditions can affect higher routes, so flexibility is key during this period.

Peak season (July & August)

This is the most popular time for hiking in the Dolomites.

We strongly recommend booking 1 to 1.5 years in advance. For iconic routes: even earlier.

Last-minute options are rare — and often require compromises. At Selfguided Dolomites, we contact earlier requesting guests immediately if spots open up.

Late season (September)

September is one of the best months to hike: stable weather, fewer crowds, and beautiful light.

Booking 6–8 months in advance is usually sufficient, though popular routes can still fill up quickly.

What happens if you book too late?

If you wait too long, you might face:

  • fully booked huts

  • disconnected itineraries

  • less optimal routes

  • increased planning stress

However, all is not lost.

There are often great alternative routes with better availability — sometimes even more rewarding than the classics. At Selfguided Dolomites, we have many as spectacular routes to recommend. Check out our dedicated blog post to our alternatives:

Are last-minute bookings possible?

Yes — but with limitations.

If you’re flexible with:

  • dates

  • route choice

  • accommodation comfort

then last-minute trips can work. But they require experience, adaptability, and a bit of luck. As mentioned before, at Selfguided Dolomites, we proactively reach out to guests as soon as spots become available. Nevertheless, for most hikers, planning ahead leads to a much smoother experience.

A smarter approach: plan early, stay flexible

The best strategy is a mix of both:

This gives you the best chance to enjoy your trip without stress.

The best approach is to combine both: book early to secure your preferred route, while staying open to alternatives if needed.

Final thought

In the Dolomites, the best experiences are often limited — not because they’re exclusive, but because they’re small, authentic, and real. Planning ahead simply means making sure you don’t miss out.
